Is a 'green' computer on the cards?

At Moogaloo we are always re-thinking how we can best do business for a positive eco and ethical impact.  Most computers create 40-80 grams of greenhouse gas emissions per hour through their electricity use (depending on electricity source and computer type), so the aggregated greenhouse gas emissions just from computers is quite sizable, nevermind the servers and fiber optic lines.  Our computers are generally on for 8-10 hours a day so this soon adds up and it doesn't even take into account the environmental impact of the internet.

The BBC website this morning shares a story about a new form of computing memory which could lead to faster starting, user-friendly computers.  It has been developed by US researchers and claims to combine the advantages of the two common forms of memory used today.  To read the full article follow this link:

We use an eco button to reduce the amount of energy our computers use when they are standing idle. Each time we take a short or long break, a phone call, go for a meeting etc. we try to remember to press the ecobutton™.  Our computer is put into the most efficient energy saving mode available which the company call 'ecomode'.  It's one small step that is easy for all of us to take.
